Happy holidays, Reader!

The end of the year is finally here - and what a year it was! Between many events showcasing best zero waste practices, important policy developments, and many reasons to celebrate among our network and broader movement, 2023 certainly kept us busy and full of updates to share with you every single month.

Before going on a well-deserved break and entering 2024 on the right foot, be sure to catch up with ZWE's latest (and last) news of 2023 below!

New guidance: setting up the right textile waste management system for your local context

From 2025 onwards, textile waste collection will be mandatory for municipalities across the EU. While some have already put systems in place for the collection and sorting, many cities will have to design the right system for their local context over the next 12 months.

In our latest ZWE paper on how to collect, sort, and reuse textile waste locally, we provide municipalities with guidance on choosing the right strategies, a short checklist clearly outlining the most important steps, as well as several case studies from Spain, Flanders in Belgium, and Finland describing different potential setups.

In the guidance you will also find our latest infographic, which illustrates an example of how a textile waste management system can be set up, involving both private, public, and nonprofit actors.

2024 European Parliament elections – our pledge for a zero waste Europe

With the 2024 European Parliament elections right around the corner, ZWE calls on EU decision makers to commit to the principles of sufficiency, resilience, and wellbeing for the next mandate.

By signing our pledge for a zero waste Europe, Members of the European Parliament and political parties will commit to:

  • Placing strategic resource use at the forefront of EU policies;
  • Preventing waste before it's generated and;
  • Reducing resource leakage from the circular economy.
Ahead of the last election in 2019, we gathered 51 signatories from the whole spectrum of political parties. MEP Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA) has already signed our pledge for 2024, but we need to engage many more to ensure the political direction of the next mandate aligns with planetary boundaries.

Share our call with current and prospective MEPs from your country to help us build a truly zero waste Europe!

ZERO: Door-to-door collection for bio-waste and recyclables
In the Portuguese village of Muxagata, the municipality decided to revert the situation with the “Muxagata Aldeia Sustentável” project to contrast a set of economic and social challenges.

The project introduced a door-to-door collection system for bio-waste and recyclables, with local employees collecting waste three times a week. Bio-waste is processed in a community composting unit, while recyclables are sent to regional waste facilities.

The project involves technical support from our Portuguese member ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável, who provided workshops on community composting.
ZW Switzerland: Results of the  RE:PAS challenge
In Switzerland (namely, in the Geneva Lake region), Zero Waste Switzerland
organised the first inter-company RE:PAS Challenge, which promoted the uptake of reusable items for take-away meals and drinks from 18 September to 8 October.
Over the 21 days the challenge took place, participating companies managed to avoid 482.4 kg of CO2 and 115.8 kg of waste! Calculating the yearly savings, the figures would become 8,201.3 kg of CO2 saved and 1,971.2 kg of waste avoided if all participants continued the challenge.
ZW Belgium: 2024 Camp Zero Dechet training courses
Since 2018, Zero Waste Belgium has been supporting youth movement groups in the country to help reduce their waste as part of the Camp Zero Dechet (Zero Waste Camp) project. Camp Zero Dechet equips camp leaders with the skills and knowledge to reduce their waste during the camp, as well as to make the whole experience more sustainable and environmentally-focused. Registration for the 2024 Camp Zero Dechet training courses is open until 31 January 2024.

Changemakers: members' objectives for 2024

2024 is around the corner and full of possibilities for zero waste actions! In December, instead of a video putting one member organisation in the spotlight, we share with you some of our members' plans and objectives for the year ahead.

Marta Brazão, President of Circular Economy Portugal:

"In 2024, Circular Economy Portugal wants to continue developing its work on sharing, reuse and repair strategies. For us, it's super important to push these circular strategies even more. Positive environmental impact needs to create social impact too, and this is where we want to act."

 United   Kingdom   Without   Incineration   Network
 (UKWIN)
Shlomo Dowen, National Coordinator of United Kingdom Without Incineration Network (UKWIN):

"In 2024, UKWIN will continue to make the case that incineration overcapacity combined with the harm incineration brings to the circular economy justifies a moratorium on new incineration capacity in England similar to the bans in Scotland and Wales."
