As the year draws to a close, we want to thank you for following our newsletter throughout 2025. This month we explore ultra-fast fashion and overconsumption, looking at how cities across Europe are testing new approaches to textile collection.
Looking ahead to 2026, Spain is getting ready for its Deposit Return System (DRS), and workshops are being planned to support local authorities in transitioning to reuse systems.

| Textile waste in transition: practical guidance for municipalities | |
| |
With mandatory separate collection of textiles kicking off in early 2025, and EU-wide Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements following in March 2028, Europe is entering a transformative period for textile waste management. The systems and assumptions that shaped the past are no longer fit for the future.
This guide provides a practical overview of the collection models and infrastructure options municipalities are adopting across Europe. It explores how local authorities can maximise both the volume and quality of textiles collected for reuse, and outlines measures that support a truly circular approach. The publication makes clear that the long-standing “out of sight, out of mind” treatment of textile waste is no longer acceptable, or viable.
The guide is part of the STICT project that focuses on how to create best practices for municipalities around textile waste prevention and management.
