Hi there, Reader!

April has been a busy month here at Zero Waste Europe (ZWE), with the planning of not one but three different events in May (see you there!), our annual Network Wide Gathering with our members and the relaunch of our big campaign promoting reuse, #GetBack!

Calling on the EU to #GetBack to reusable packaging and not settle for single-use plastic

Towards the end of 2022, the European Commission published its long awaited proposal on the revision of Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This proposal is the first to put forward measures aiming at reducing waste at source, including waste prevention and reuse targets.

Through the #GetBack campaign, we continue to advocate for ambitious legislation that enables the development of the infrastructure needed to build efficient systems for reusable packaging, making sure they are mainstream, interoperable and accessible all across Europe, moving away from single-use packaging.

How can you help?
You can show your support by diving into our publications on transitioning to reusable packaging or by amplifying the message of #GetBack on social media.

The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and Zero Waste Europe are very happy to invite you to participate in the Global Zero Waste Cities Summit on 31 May 2023. Together with experts and advocates, we will discuss the latest developments on zero waste as a proven, cost-effective strategy to reduce waste pollution and help cities reach their climate goals.

Trough this interactive, virtual summit, hundreds of municipal officials and waste management implementers from around the world will gather under the overarching theme, ‘Local Leadership for Climate Resilience’.

ZWE Live! Webinar: Allocating recycled content - what are the impacts? on 11 May 2023

Recycling has an important role to play in closing the material loop, as it keeps already used resources and increases the circularity of plastic packaging. Nowadays, most recycling technologies have a well-established accounting methodology, ensuring a high level of transparency and traceability along the value chain. However, multi-output technologies such as pyrolysis and gasification require the use of the mass-balance chain of custody. The latter is highly controversial given how it allocates recycled content among the output produced.

In this webinar, we will present the main results of our latest study on the environmental impact and circularity of the different allocation rules for recycled content from multi-output recycling technologiesBesides presenting the report’s main findings, we will have a lively discussion with panellists from EU institutions and civil society.

Save your spot: "Zero waste at the coast: Lessons on waste prevention for policy-makers" on 17 May 2023

We still have a few seats left for our in-person conference on 17 May 2023, where we'll be looking at some of Europe’s best practice initiatives on preventing marine litter from coastal turism and recreational activities.

The event will bring together local actors who have been behind these best practices with representatives from Brussels, to better understand
how local actions can inform key upcoming legislative decisions on plastic waste

Zero Waste Europe gathers in Guimarães, Portugal
At its core, Zero Waste Europe is a network. Without our members, we simply wouldn't be Zero Waste Europe. The annual Network Wide Gathering (NWG) reflects the significance of this bond with our movement, as it gives us a chance to come together in person to celebrate our achivements, share good practices, get inspired, and continue to build our movement in order to achieve our vision of a zero waste Europe.

As you read these words, we are doing just that - gathering in Guimarães, Portugal with our members from all over Europe to organise our plans for the rest of the year, share stories, laugh, and reconnect.

Look out for next month's newsletter, where we will share much more about the Network Wide Gathering (and if you can't wait, you can see how last year's NWG went below).
Hnutí DUHA: Putting an end to energy poverty in Czech Republic
Together with an alliance of other NGO's, our member Hnutí DUHA is calling for the Czech government to address the impacts of rising energy prices and energy poverty through the Energy for the People initiative. After a winter with extreme energy scarcity, the alliance is calling for politicians to prioritise sufficiency and wellbeing by developing cheap and clean energy from renewable sources and placing it back in the hands of households, communities, and municipalities.
ZW Austria: Celebrating Fashion Revolution Week
With Fashion Revolution Week 2023 taking place this week (22-29 April), our member Zero Waste Austria is taking a stand against fast fashion with their Fair Fashion Guide. In the guide, Zero Waste Austria explains how the fast fashion business model works, how it impacts the environment through microplastics and landfilling, as well as how consumers can make better choices for themselves and the planet when it comes to their wardrobe.
