Enjoying Summer, Reader?

Just like you, our newsletter will be taking a small Summer break in August - but not before bringing our top stories of July. Among other things, you can catch up with our latest paper on textile waste prevention; register for the LIFE BIOBEST webinar of September and the Study Tour of October; and check our latest job vacancies and opportunities for collaboration.

We will be back in September with more news from the zero waste movement. See you then - and enjoy the sun in the meantime!

T(h)reading a path: Towars textile waste prevention targets

We have been working tirelessly on textile waste prevention this year, starting with our campaign around circular fashion in January. As July comes to an end, Zero Waste Europe is proud to announce that we have published a policy paper on textile waste prevention!

This important paper builds on our efforts to call more attention to the current revision of the Waste Framework Directive, which we believe underdelivers. The EU has yet to set concrete measures on textile waste prevention, thereby cancelling out any progress towards a sustainable fashion industry.

The paper “T(h)reading a path: Towards textile waste prevention targets” not only sets out a way forward for policy-makers, it also highlights how Europe found itself on the path towards becoming the top buyer and polluter of apparel globally.

#LIFEBIOBEST webinar: How to best collect bio-waste in high density areas?

Join us on 27 September 2023 for the very first instalment of the new #LIFEBIOBEST webinar series, exploring best practices for bio-waste collection in high density areas.

As outlined in the Waste Framework Directive (WFD), member states are required to collect bio-waste separately from 1 January 2024 onwards. Given the wide disparities in the efficiency of collection and recycling across the EU, many municipalities are still struggling to achieve good results, both in terms of quality and collection rates.

In large, densely populated cities, bio-waste collection can be a particular challenge.
Based on the most up-to-date best practices and findings validated by the
LIFE BIOBEST project and ZWE network success cases, this webinar aims to present how best to collect organic waste in high-density areas. It will share key details and evidence on how to set up such high-performance systems in a range of urban contexts across Europe.

Learn more about the DO’s and DON’Ts of effective bio-waste management, including:

  • Why and how door-to-door collection systems perform much better than other models in high-density areas such as Milan.
  • How to secure the support and participation of all community members through innovative communication campaigns and engagement practices.
  • The importance of prioritising food waste over garden waste in such locations, as well as how to tailor the frequency and style of collection rounds in order to maximise capture rates.

Recycling Netwerk Benelux: 'Yes We Can!' campaign to further push wins around reuse and DRS in Belgium
As part of the Statiegeldalliantie, our member Recycling Netwerk Benelux has launched a final push of their 'Yes We Can!' campaign to bring the recent wins around Deposit Return Systems (DRS) in Belgium over the finish line.

Over the past months, all Belgian regions have agreed that reuse - and, in particular, DRS - is the way forward for better waste prevention, and now want to introduce deposit measures by 2025.
UKWIN: Consett incinerator plans rejected
In the United Kingdom, our member UKWIN and the residents of County Durham are celebrating the latest achievement in their fight towards and incineration-free country. After a 4-year fight, the plans for an incinerator at a former Consett steel plant location were rejected by Durham County Council.
ZERO: Are the eco-lines of fast fashion brands really sustainable?
As part of their Greenwatch blog series, our Portuguese member ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável analysed the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion, and whether eco-friendly lines from these brands can truly be considered sustainable.
ZERO's conclusion is that no, they cannot - but we encourage you to read their full arguments to find out why!
