December 2024

Dear Reader,

As you are probably aware, LIFE BIOBEST was launched to empower local communities to transform their bio-waste management practices, turning environmental challenges into opportunities. Soil health is at the heart of this missionand with 60-70% of EU soils currently classified as unhealthy, the need for action has never been more urgent.

This World Soil Day, we are proud to highlight our newly published guidelines summary, which distills insight from four of our previously published deliverables. This document serves as a tool for municipalities and waste management professionals, offering key takeaways on implementing effective bio-waste collection systems, leveraging economic incentives, optimising treatment processes for quality outputs, and engaging communities through tested communications strategies.

By bringing together these critical aspects, we provide a holistic approach to transforming bio-waste into high-quality compost and digestatethe very substances needed to rejuvenate our depleted soils.

Since our last newsletter in June, the LIFE BIOBEST Consortium has undertaken several key activities, including:

New LIFE BIOBEST
publications

Alongside our new Summary of Guidelines, LIFE BIOBEST has released two complementary tools to strengthen bio-waste management practices:

  • D2.3 Assessment matrix of best practices provides a structured evaluation of contextual factors that affect bio-waste management alongside recommendations, enabling identification of context-specific strategies;
  • D5.3 Proposal for quality standards establishes a framework for setting EU quality standards for bio-waste entering recycling facilities, drawing from expert consultations and Member State approaches to improve compost and digestate production.

Future events
and publications

As we move into the final phase of the LIFE BIOBEST project, we are preparing several strategic outputs:

  • In January 2025, the Consortium will publish a comprehensive guidance for the EU on improving bio-waste management, which translates the project findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers. The guidance will be accompanied by a short animated video highlighting key takeaways of the guidance;
  • In the first quarter of the year, we will organise the last technical webinar of the project as well as an online capacity building event;
  • Throughout the last 6 months of the project, LIFE BIOBEST expert will still be available to provide technical support to local and regional stakeholders (apply here);
  • In June 2025, the Consortium will organise the final project event in Brussels, Belgium, inviting all stakeholders and interested parties to join us to explore the project findings and future impact of LIFE BIOBEST!
