ReuSe Vanguard Project - Reuse Blueprint

After 3 years of work on the ground with public authorities, businesses, investors, and civil society groups, we are very happy to publish the first version of what will become a European blueprint to scale-up implementation of reuse.

The blueprint outlines the requirements for the creation and maintenance of well-performing, resilient reuse systems for the packaging sector for take-away food and drinks.

This draft blueprint is largely the product of collaborative efforts within the pan-European ReuSe Vanguard Project (RSVP). It reflects the key lessons from the co-design phase of city-scale projects involving local reuse ecosystems across five countries (but also beyond):

with the overall project coordination from Zero Waste Europe.

This first version of the blueprint was published ahead of the vote on the revision of EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) by the European Parliament in mid-October as, now more than ever, we need European reuse targets for the take-away sectors in order to provide legal certainty to investors and public officials.

ZWE discusses packaging systems at the 2nd Franco-American Symposium - join us!

Our Toxic-Free Circular Economy Policy Officer, Dorota Napierska, will speak on behalf of Zero Waste Europe at the 2nd Franco-American Symposium on 9-10 November 2023. This edition's theme focuses on the optimisation of packaging systems' safety for reuse and recycling in compliance with the new EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Dorota will join the "Motivation and goal of the PPWR" panel session on 9 November to discuss whether the new EU rules on packaging and packaging waste will bring a much-needed focus on waste prevention.

The Symposium is free of charge and participants can join either in-person or online.

Zero Waste Italy: Biking to Rome to deliver the "Basta Rottomare" petition
On 1 October, and as part of the ReFestival activities, Zero Waste Italy and Zero Waste Europe's President, Rossano Ercolini, started a bike ride from Capannori to Rome with two other zero waste activists to deliver the "Basta Rottamare" petition to the Italian government.

This zero waste entourage arrived to Rome on 5 October and delivered the petition's 30.170 signatures, signaling a strong support for a national regulation encouraging the repair and reuse of goods and products.
UKWIN: Incineration overcapacity briefing
A new report published by the UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) shows that, if waste reduction targets are met, English incineration capacity will exceed available feedstock by 2.6 million tonnes in 2027, with this overcapacity growing to 7.4 million tonnes by 2042 even if no additional incinerators are built.

The study shows how expansion in England would increase incineration overcapacity at local, regional, and national levels, harming current and future efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Za Zemiata: Bulgarian court rules out Sofia waste incinerator plant due to unassessed health risks and lack of public consultation
Our Bulgaria member organisation, Za Zemiata, has celebrated an important victory against a significant incineration project. After eight years of litigation, Sofia’s Administrative Court overturned the environmental impact assessment for a waste incineration plant in the Bulgarian capital.

Expected to have burned processed waste in the form of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), the plant would have put the health of Sofia’s residents at risk, polluted the air, generated toxic ash, and created additional traffic, the court ruled.

Changemakers

Each month, our ZWE Changemakers campaign puts the spotlight on one of our member organisations. In September, we are giving the floor to one of our members in the UK - the United Kingdom Without Incineration Network (UKWIN).
