Priatelia Zeme - SPZ: Campaigning against environmental pollution near cement plant in Turna nad Bodvou, Slovakia
Our Slovak member Friends of the Earth - SPZ has revealed concerning levels of pollution near a cement plant in Turňa nad Bodvou, Slovakia through comprehensive biomonitoring research. The study, conducted together with ToxicoWatch as part of the True Toxic Toll project, found dangerous substances including dioxins, PCBs, PAHs, and forever chemicals (PFAS) in local environmental samples. These pollutants—linked to the plant's burning of "solid alternative fuels" (waste materials like plastics, rubber, and tyres)—pose serious health risks to nearby communities

SPZ is now advocating for continuous emissions monitoring and mobilising local residents to protect their health, demonstrating how environmental organisations can bring scientific evidence and community action together to hold industrial polluters accountable.
