As spring arrives and nature renews itself around us, some communities are proving that change isn’t just a dream, it’s happening now. In Catalonia two municipalities are implementing plastic prevention plans, actively involving citizens, local businesses and key stakeholders.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for three key events covering Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), bio-waste, and zero waste initiatives.
A special spotlight on the International Day of Zero Waste on 30 March, this year focusing on textiles and fashion. As European cities are tackling new textile collection mandates, the shift towards a circular economy is gaining momentum. Want to be at the forefront of urban change? Breaking the plastic cycle: How local efforts are driving change in Catalonia | |
|
The municipalities of Viladecans and Torrelles de Llobregat are reducing the use of single-use plastics by introducing reuse systems. With support from the local organisation Rezero and the Elevating Reuse in Cities (ERIC) project, they are making sustainable choices easier and more accessible for everyone.
Viladecans engaged 82 local shops and 115 families in a three-month campaign promoting reusable containers. Meanwhile, Torrelles de Llobregat expanded its reusable nappy service, supporting 13 families since 2021 and creating an ecological alternative to disposable nappies. These initiatives demonstrate how community-focused strategies can drive meaningful changes, proving that local action can have a significant impact on waste reduction.
