Hi there, dear Reader!

March is the “month of expectations" and indeed we are busy preparing a series of events and publications for these upcoming weeks. The International Zero Waste Day campaign will accompany us throughout March, where we will share a series of reports and stories on four topics: prevention, useful policies, new economies and thriving communities.

Looking at the European landscape, we're thrilled to bring you valuable insights on how municipalities can tackle textile waste in their communities, since EU legislation will require mandatory separate collection of textiles from 2025. We also want to shine a light on the town of Gusinje, Montenegro, that despite the numerous challenges, managed to implement strategic measures for waste reduction and recycling.

Empowering municipalities: methods for locally collecting, sorting, and repurposing textile waste

With the EU-wide mandatory separate collection of textile waste set to take effect in 2025, municipalities now have the opportunity to synchronise textile collection with the waste hierarchy, thereby fostering local reuse and repair systems.
This paper offers insights into successful textile waste collection practices across Europe, emphasising the importance of tailoring collection methods to citizens' needs, ensuring quality sorting for reuse, and establishing effective governance structures. As the paper showcases, municipalities play a crucial role in driving local reuse efforts by implementing data reporting requirements, setting performance indicators, and integrating collection and reuse policies within broader frameworks.
