2023 was a year marked by challenges, both human and environmental - but in spite of the adversity that impacted nations and communities across the globe, hope still finds fertile ground in the zero waste movement.
In her start of the year blog, our Executive Director Esra Tat puts pen to paper to reflect on the year that passed while drafting a roadmap and priorities for the year ahead. The vision sketched out is one of determination, with a clear resolve to continue pushing Europe down the path of sufficiency, wellbeing, and resilience.

Upcoming ZWE Live! webinar - On the go: accelerating progress towards reusable takeaway packaging on 5 March 2024
Join us on 5 March 2024 for the first ZWE Live! webinar of the year, which look into the how of accelerating reusable packaging across the EU, a question that is especially pertinent after the latest round of negotiations around the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
Despite the recent challenges at the EU level, there's sparks of hope and positive impact coming from packaging waste reduction and prevention programmes at the local level. In recent years, many cities and municipalities have recognised the importance of going beyond the usual attempts to “recycle better”, instead focusing on introducing systems that embed reusable packaging within key public and private spaces.
Participate in this webinar to learn from pioneer cities that have embarked on a journey to introduce some of the continent’s most ambitious packaging reuse systems, as well as the key philosophy and methodology of these initiatives, including: - What are the essential criteria cities need to follow and adapt to when considering the design and implementation of a reuse system?
- What are the most promising incentives to ensure reusable packaging becomes the norm again in Europe?
- What challenges have these cities faced when starting their initiatives, and how are they working to overcome them?
