Hi there, dear Reader!

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year? January feels like yesterday, yet here we are, with a packed spring behind us and an exciting summer ahead.

In the past month, we launched the 5th edition of the State of Zero Waste Municipalities Report, unveiled the updated Reuse Blueprint, and marked the successful conclusion of the LIFE BIOBEST project

Looking ahead, June brings new opportunities, with upcoming training sessions designed for those ready to dive deeper into the practicalities of reusable packaging systems.

Highlight of the month

What Europe’s pioneering cities can teach us about reuse

The second edition of the Reuse Blueprint is now available! This updated Blueprint from the ReuSe Vanguard Project (RSVP) builds on the experiences of seven pioneering cities: Aarhus, Barcelona, Berlin, Ghent, Leuven, Paris, and Rotterdam. It sets out five essential system criteria to ensure reuse systems are legally compliant, user-friendly, and future-proof, focusing on recognition, effectiveness, inclusiveness, interoperability, and guaranteed safety.

“The Blueprint is a great (and additional) tool for public authorities and private entities like Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) to advance prevention and reuse while supporting the right regulatory and economic incentives”, Nathan Dufour, RSVP Leader and Reuse Systems Manager at Zero Waste Europe.

We have compiled a short list of things you might find useful:

  • The final LIFE BIOBEST event showcased successful bio-waste management practices from Milan and Catalonia. A key output was a guidance document with policy recommendations to improve bio-waste collection, treatment, and compost uptake across Europe. Read more.

  • Register now for the course on reusable packaging systems, offering practical skills to implement harmonised reuse solutions, tailor strategies locally, involve stakeholders, and support Europe’s shift to standardised infrastructure. It was developed in collaboration with Mission Zero Academy (MiZA) and the RSVP project.
