All We Need Is Less: Shifting fashion towards sufficiency

Fashion, with its enticing trends, often masks an unsavoury truth: excessive consumption and waste caused by the industry's reliance on selling large volumes of trendy items. In Zero Waste Europe's latest policy briefing, A Zero Waste Vision for Fashion – Chapter 1: All We Need Is Less, we call for an urgent shift towards sufficiency in the fashion industry to stay within planetary boundaries.

How can lawmakers support the shift to sufficiency?

The briefing outlines how banning the destruction of unsold goods, setting a target for textile waste reduction and resource use, and transforming EU waste legislation into a 'Resource Framework Directive' in line with a 1.5-degree target is needed to support the transition of the sector.

As the first chapter in a two-part series on textiles and fashion across the entire value chain, this briefing looks at the need to reduce overall production and consumption. In the following chapter on circularity, we will outline how the clothes we produce should be designed, used, reused, recycled and treated at the end of life (sign up to receive the next chapter when it comes out).

Register for the next ZWE Live! Webinar: Reinventing glass

Glass packaging plays a crucial role in the ongoing transition towards sustainable packaging systems. Reusable glass bottles produce 75% fewer carbon emissions than single-use PET bottles and 57% fewer than aluminium cansHowever, single-use glass has the highest environmental footprint compared to other single-use materials, as highlighted in a recent Eunomia-ZWE studyDecarbonisation of Single-Use Beverage Packaging.

Could the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) reduce the impact of packaging on the environment by favouring reusable glass over single-use options?
Join us on 10 October to discuss single-use and reusable glass packaging with our panellists:

  • Simon Hann, Eunomia Research & Consulting, will share the results of the study,  examining the 1.5-carbon budgets for aluminium, PET, and glass beverage containers within the EU.
  • Adeline Farrely, FEVE, will represent the perspective of the glass industry.
  • Paul Gabie, ecoSPIRITS, will present its solution for reusable glass packaging.

Join the upcoming LIFE BIOBEST capacity-building workshop - Unlocking Efficiency: Strategies for building a high-performing municipal bio-waste system

Join us online or in person on 25 October for the first capacity-building workshop under the LIFE BIOBEST project: Unlocking Efficiency: Strategies for building a high-performing municipal bio-waste systemThe workshop will equip you with the necessary knowledge and tools to help implement and optimise an efficient separate bio-waste system within your municipality.

What to expect from the capacity-building workshop:

  • Learn from some of Europe’s most recognised frontrunners of separate bio-waste collection and recycling.
  • Explore the most common regulatory, political, and contextual barriers to implementing best practices for separate collection, treatment, and output use.
  • Take part in the co-creation of customised strategies to optimise existing separate bio-waste collection systems.
  • Get access to the latest data and knowledge on bio-waste separate collection and recycling, with a presentation of the preliminary results of the LIFE BIOBEST project.
  • Join the LIFE BIOBEST Supporting Stakeholder Network, connecting with experts and committed officials from across the EU.

Zero Waste Alliance Ukraine: Getting the anti-incineration message across through whimsical animation
Our member Zero Waste Alliance Ukraine (ZWAU) has created a new animation video, Mr. Burn Waster's Show, which perfectly balances whimsical creativity and entertainment with a strong political message, calling for policymakers in the war-torn country to not fall for the false promise of incineration in the post-war restoration of Ukraine.
ZWL: Brand Audit of beach trash proves Latvian DRS succesful
In Latvia, our member Zero Waste Latvija organised the annual Brand Audit on 16 September (coordinated globally by the Break Free From Plastic movement). The waste collected along the Latvian coast told a clear success story; while beverage bottles have previously been in the lead as the most common beach trash collected, this year's Brand Audit contained almost no bottles. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the Latvian deposit return system, which was introduced two years ago. However, while the bottles have left the beach, their lids and corks are still plentiful, as is the new 'top trash': cigarette butts.
ZWS: RE:PAS Challenge asks Swiss companies to choose reusables
Our member Zero Waste Switzerland has launched the first RE:PAS challenge, a competition for businesses and their employees, which challenges them to use reusable containers for their coffee or lunch breaks instead of taking the easy route of single-use packaging and cutlery. Participating companies can purchase reusable starter kits for employees taking part, and at the end of the challenge, the companies will receive a certificate showcasing their CO2 savings and waste avoided (and perhaps even win a price).

Changemakers

Each month, our ZWE Changemakers campaign sheds a spotlight on one of our member organisations. In September, we are giving the microphone to one of our Portuguese members, ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável.
