Learning from the global zero waste movement at the 2024 International Zero Waste Cities Conference

What does a global movement look like in practice? And what does it mean to be part of one?

At the 2024 International Zero Waste Cities Conference and the Methane Summit in Tanzania, organised by GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) and Nipe Fagio, Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) staff and members gathered with over 200 participants from across the globe to exchange impactful zero waste strategies.

Our latest blog post brings you unique perspectives and insights on these events from our members Piotr Barczak (Polish Zero Waste Association), Vanja Cicmil (Zero Waste Montenegro), Juliette Franquet (Zero Waste France), and Ismael Casotti Rienda (ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável).

They share their favourite moments in Tanzania and how these global exchanges are essential to driving the zero waste movement forward.

#BreakFreeFromPlastic: Elite athletes and sports organisations call on Coca-Cola and Pepsi to #BeAReuseChampion
In collaboration with #BreakFreeFromPlastic (BFFP) and other organisations, over 100 sports organisations and elite athletes from around the world, including Olympians and world champions, called on leading beverage companies Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and bottler Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) to curb plastic pollution by significantly increasing reusable packaging.

EBM: Reducing food waste through the Plate 12.3 project
In Slovenia, our member Ekologi brez meja (EBM) has been addressing the challenge of food waste in restaurants through the Krožnik 12.3 (Plate 12.3) project. This initiative aims to not only reduce the amount of food waste in these businesses, but also help them pursue sustainable procurement policies and expand the range of sustainable meals. Besides established restaurant staff, the project also wants to educate the next generation of caterers by including high school pupils and catering and tourism students in its target audience.

On the occasion of the global Plastic Free July campaign, GAIA wrote a deep-dive article on the intersection of plastic use and health. Highlighting the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution, the article explains the urgency of reducing plastic reliance in the medical field, mentions innovative solutions, and urges for policy changes.
