Happy International Day of Zero Waste, Reader!
Today (30 March 2023) marks the very first internationally recognized Day of Zero Waste, observed by the UN. This is a big deal to us and our network, as we have been pushing for recognition of the zero waste movement for more than two decades.
We encourage you to celebrate the day together with us (and don't fret if you read this after the day has passed - to us, every day is a Day of Zero Waste).

Marking the first International Day of Zero Waste
On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste - meaning that every year on this date, the global community will come together to raise awareness and push for political action to adopt zero waste strategies.
Together with our mother organisation GAIA and its global network of member organisations fighting to end waste pollution, we see this day as an opportunity to uplift our movement’s vision and work. At the same time, we are also wary of the concept of "zero waste" being co-opted to promote false solutions, or weakened to focus more on individual behaviours and lifestyle.
This is why we will use this International Day of Zero Waste (and all coming days) to push forward our vision of a truly zero waste society, as one that is:
- Built on the principles of sufficiency and human wellbeing.
- Rooted in social and environmental justice.
- Focused on the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.
You can support our global campaign by amplifying our messages on social media, sharing our asks with decision-makers or reading our Zero Waste Day blog on the topic of textile waste.

Mixed waste sorting - a must for the Circular Economy
On 21 March, representatives of regional and national governments, mixed waste sorting (MWS) operators, recyclers, experts, and technology providers from all across Europe gathered in Brussels for the Reloop-Zero Waste Europe conference on “Mixed Waste Sorting: the next frontier for the circular economy” in collaboration with the European Committee of the Regions.
During the event, they offered their expertise on the introduction of MWS as an additional tool for the material recovery and re-circulation of Europe’s valuable resources. In particular, the discussions focused on the science of, and technologies for carrying out, MWS; examples from countries and places where this practice is already in place; and the policies needed to roll out MWS. Want to know more? You can check out the event's Resources Page for the full conference video, speakers’ presentations, photos, and much more.

EBM: Second edition of the Festival of Reuse held in Maribor | | For the second year in a row, our member Ekologi brez meja (EBM) organised a festival focused on reuse in the Slovenian city of Maribor. The festival, which took place on 22 March, hosted recycling and repair workshops, a stand showing how to do separate collection, a zero waste shop, a travelling class room, and much more. | | RNB: Deposit on cans introduced in the Netherlands | | From April 1, 2023, a 0,15 EUR deposit will be introduced on beverage cans in the Netherlands. This comes after more than 20 years of political debate, with NGOs such as our member Recycling Netwerk Benelux (RNB) pushing for the inclusion of cans. Although the new system has clear points of improvement, this a huge win for the zero waste movement in the Netherlands.
